Statement from the Bishop of Winchester following the murder of Father Jacques Hamel

    27 July 2016

The Right Reverend Tim Dakin, Bishop of Winchester, said:

"Yesterday’s shocking murder of Father Jacques Hamel at the church in St-Etienne-du-Rouvray, Normandy, is deeply disturbing. It is especially distressing that Father Jacques was attacked while saying mass with his congregation around him. This violation of a place of peaceful worship appals me and is an outrage to people of every faith.

"As Christians, we are assured that through the life, death and resurrection of Jesus that the love of God triumphs over evil. We remember Father Jacques in our prayers, and we also pray for his parishioners and for the people of France.

"We hold the love of God in our hearts, knowing that it is more powerful than hate or anger, and that it will guide us out of darkness into light."
