On Saturday, Linda Galvin, Assistant Curate at St James Church West End, Southampton took part in a charity skydive in aid of Southampton Street Pastors.
Despite her fear of heights, Linda and a group from Southampton Street Pastors took the leap to raise money for the Southampton branch of the charity. 15,000 feet in the air, Linda was one of a group of four aiming to perform the highest ever Street Pastors patrol.
The Street Pastors are trained volunteers who go out on night time patrols of Southampton’s bars and nightclubs, offering practical help and support to the people they meet. During their service, they help people in a variety of ways, from calming aggressive situations and supporting vulnerable people to handing out fruit pastilles and bottles of water. They also hand out flip-flops, making the volunteers a welcome sight to those with aching feet struggling to walk home.
The Diocese of Winchester supports Street Pastor patrols similar to the Southampton team in towns and cities across the Diocese. Each week, in Andover, Winchester, Eastleigh, Basingstoke, Chandler’s Ford, Hedge End and Bournemouth, volunteers head out at night to offer reassurance, safety and support to their communities.
Linda, Assistant Curate at St James Church West End, Southampton said:
“I was absolutely terrified but I’m so glad I did it. It’s such a great cause I thought it was worth throwing myself out of a perfectly good working plane for. I’m so proud of the work that Street Pastors do on the night streets of Southampton and I want to thank everyone that’s donated – you’re keeping this wonderful charity going, helping the people of Southampton week after week.”
By raising money for the Southampton branch of the charity, Linda is helping to ensure the future of the service it provides to the people of Southampton every week. If you would like show your support and help Linda reach her £1000 fundraising target, please donate here:
