Schools and Education

The majority of Church of England Schools established in the 19th century, were built to serve the community around them and can still be thought of today as 'community schools with a distinctive Christian character'.

There are 137 Church of England infant, junior and primary schools and two Church of England Academies in the Portsmouth and Winchester Dioceses that are part of the state-maintained sector.

Within the primary schools alone, more than 30,000 children and 2,000 members of staff, experience a Christian approach to life through the values that underpin the work of the school and a daily act of collective worship.

There is one Church of England University, three Academies and 35 Independent Church of England Schools, one Sixth Form College and eleven Affiliated Schools that have strong links to the Dioceses.

The Education Team also works with principals and senior staff of Sixth Form and Further Education Colleges across the Dioceses in their leadership roles and staff with learners; offering support to promote the development of concepts of spirituality and values in the FE curriculum, and supporting and promoting chaplaincy.

These schools and colleges represent the Church of England's main engagement in education and mission with children and young people in the Dioceses of Portsmouth and Winchester.

The Education Team offers support to Clergy and Parishes in their work with Church Schools and Community Schools.
