Schools and Education
There are 145 Church of England schools in Portsmouth and Winchester Dioceses that are part of the state-maintained sector; 3 academies, 9 affiliated schools, one church sixth form college, a higher education college and 35 independent schools. These schools and colleges represent the Church of England's main engagement in education and mission with children and young people in the Dioceses of Portsmouth and Winchester. More than 30,000 children glimpse something daily of the Christian life through the daily worship and community living within these schools. The education team work with local authorities in Bournemouth, east Dorset Hampshire, Isle of Wight, Portsmouth, Southampton, the States of Guernsey, and the States of Jersey.
Church of England schools serve the community around them and can be thought of as community schools with a Christian religious character.
