Deaf awareness
Churches Together with Deaf People in Winchester and Portsmouth Diocesan Areas
We have been working with Deaf, Deafened, Deaf-blind and Hard of Hearing People for more than 100 years. The two Dioceses work together to fund and support a full time Chaplain, and a team of Volunteers, both Lay and Ordained. We are happy to work across the Area with anyone who needs our help. The work is largely funded by the two Dioceses though we do work ecumenically as much as we can, and the volunteers come from all the main denominations.

We provide, thanks to our Volunteers, the full range of pastoral and spiritual care for our members. The Chaplain and team will take, or sign as needed, weddings, funerals, and baptisms.
As well as the above monthly services we also support churches that provide signing for the Deaf members of their congregations on a weekly basis.
We also provide advice and training on “Signing in Church” and “Deaf Culture” to PCCs, church groups, deaneries, and church schools.
We are happy to sign for one-off special events and services.
We are keen to help in any way we can. For more information please look at the Quarterly Deaf Church Magazine. This can be obtained from the Chaplain.
Working with the Hard of Hearing
We believe all those who wish should have the opportunity to play a full part in the life of their Church. So we are keen to support Hard of Hearing Christians access fully their local Church and its life.
So our Hard of Hearing Group will:
- provide information and training to PCCs and church groups so that your Hard of Hearing members can be fully included.
- provide trained lip speakers for one-off special events in church.
- provide information and advice on Loop Systems, and other equipment.
If you would like one of our Hard of Hearing Packs, please contact John Chamberlain on 02392 265516.
