A memorial service will be held later this month in memory of the Rt Rev Michael Manktelow, a former Bishop of Basingstoke, who died on Monday 24 July aged 89.
Bishop Michael was the Bishop of Basingstoke from 1977 to 1993, and for 14 of these years he combined this post with that of Canon Residentiary of Winchester Cathedral. He is remembered in this diocese with affection by those who knew and worked with him during his time here. Following his retirement to Chichester in 1993, he became an assistant bishop in the Diocese in Europe and was able to indulge his love of travel, including visits to Scandinavia to minister to the English-speaking congregations there, as well as writing a biography of Bishop John Moorman.
He is survived by his wife and three daughters, for whom we continue to pray. The memorial service for Bishop Michael will be in Chichester Cathedral on Friday 29 September at 3.30pm. Bishop David Williams, the current Bishop of Basingstoke, will be attending.
