Bishop election confirmed

21 December 2011

The Revd Canon Tim Dakin last night took another step toward his formal inauguration as the 97th Bishop of Winchester, when the ‘Confirmation of Election’ ceremony took place at Lambeth Palace.

An intimate affair, attended by just a few family and close friends, former colleagues and representatives from the diocese, the ceremony included the formal sitting of the Ecclesiastical Court where the relevant papers pertaining to the election were presented, checked and signed in the presence of the Archbishop of Canterbury, the Bishop of London and the Vicar General.

Following the conclusion of legalities, Archbishop Rowan then reminded the Bishop-elect of some of his predecessors in the role, questioning which of their qualities he might identify with. Particular citation was given to John Taylor (1975-85) who had been General Secretary to the Church Mission Society prior to his appointment, the role which Canon Tim currently holds.

A call for all

Addressing him with warmth, face-to-face before the altar, the Archbishop said that the call that Canon Tim had received was a call not only to him, but to the entire diocese, and charged the diocesan representatives present to pledge their support and prayer as they grow together.

With the confirmation complete, the next step will now be the consecration service, when Canon Tim is made a Bishop at St Paul’s Cathedral on 25 January, before he is installed in his new diocese at Winchester Cathedral on 21 April.
