Southampton churches offer homelessness solutions

Christian leaders across Southampton have urged people to support the city’s homeless, rough sleepers and those in poor quality housing at an event organised by Love Southampton, a City-wide partnership of churches.

The Homelessness and Housing Awareness prayer evening took place at Central Baptist Church on Tuesday and was designed to deepen community understanding of the problems surrounding homelessness in Southampton at the moment.

Participants were encouraged to pray for people who are homeless, as well as support practical solutions such as contributing to the Southampton Churches’ Rent Deposit Scheme, working with local organisations including the City Council and participating in befriending initiatives to tackle loneliness and isolation.

The Rent Deposit Scheme is a fund to support people on low incomes or in receipt of benefits to gain access to privately rented accommodation within the City.

Bishop of Southampton the Rt Rev Dr Jonathan Frost, who chairs Love Southampton’s Council of Reference, commented: “Love Southampton Housing Group is keen to raise awareness of the problems surrounding homelessness in our city. We know that there are still many people who are without homes, struggling to pay their rent or in sub-standard accommodation and it is important that the churches play their part with the council and other local organisations, and work together to tackle these issues. I urge people to pray for those in need and support local practical housing solutions such as those which Love Southampton is supporting.”
