Festival of Flowers, Art & Music in the Church

25- 27 July 08


St Matthew's Church, Cobo, (Guernsey)

Third Concert with Sam Penkett & Fr Luke at 7.30pm in the Church followed by refreshments in the Vicarage Garden.  Tickets £5.

Friday 25th - Sunday 27th July  Festival of Flowers, Art & Music in the Church.  1pm to 6pm daily.  Cream Teas will be served on Saturday and Sunday afternoons in the Vicarage Garden.

Hidden Talent:  A display of Art & Craft items by members of our congregation, running throughout the Festival.

Open gardens in Stockbridge

26-27 July

Gardens Open in Stockbridge. Come and view the 11 gardens open to the public over this weekend. This includes a half acre wildlife garden in the grounds of the Primary School. Amesbury Brass Band and Lockerley Brass Band will be playing a selection of music on the Church Lawn, where cream teas will also be served.

Teas will be available at the Robinsons house in Trafalgar Way.

Entry for tour of gardens £5.00 and tickets will be available at St Peter's Church from 1.15pm. Gardens open from 1.30pm - 5.30pm both days.


The Fifth Torteval Scarecrow Weekend

26-27 July 08


At St Philippe de Torteval, Guernsey

Saturday 26 July 10am-5pm, Sunday 27 July 10am-4.30pm

Over 60 scarecrows of all shapes, sizes and material will be on display. The Dean of Guernsey, The Very Reverend Canon Paul Mellor and his wife will be the judges.

Unaccompanied tours of the Scarecrow Trail through some of Torteval’s delightful lanes commence from the Parish Church (Perry’s Guide 26 D3). The trail takes approximately 1½hours at a gentle stroll. A programme describing the scarecrow entries and a map of the Trail can be purchased for £1 at the Parish Church on both days only. Free parking is available and signed off the main Pleinmont Road.

Courses for 'volunteer' organists

A series of courses is being continued at Sarum College for the ‘reluctant’ or volunteer organist, providing support and training to help those who have volunteered to play the organ in their church. The courses include sessions on hymn playing, accompanying services, coping with organ stops, simple use of pedals and useful repertoire – an essential survival package! We also get the chance to play the Cathedral organ…

Directed by Robert Fielding with visiting tutors Rosemary Field, Richard Godfrey, Cathy Lamb  and Daniel Moult. All have specialist skills in understanding the problems at this level

The Lambeth Conference is a meeting of the Bishops of the Anglican Communion of churches. It has happened about every 10 years since 1867. It is a celebration of faith and looks at some of the issues that concern the church as a whole.

  • support available from the Communications Department

There will also be time for getting to know one another so that we can begin to form a strong network of people involved in web and new media at parish level across the Diocese.

During the morning there will be the opportunity to participate in one of a wide range of seminars. The afternoon session will begin with a talk by Ms Jane Fisher leading a pleanary session on the future of the Criminal Records Bureau and the introduction of the Government's new Independent Safeguarding Authority (ISA). The final part of the day will be led by the Revd Canon Simon Baker, the Director of Ministry and Pastoral Planning.

Churchwardens' Weekend

This weeekend which begins with supper on Friday night and concludes after lunch on Sunday, is primarily designed for those who are new to the office of Churchwarden and Deputy Churchwarden.

The weekend is led by the Revd Canon Simon Baker, the Director of Ministry and Pastoral Planning. The archdeacons and key personnel from Diocesan Office Departments will lead different sessions regarding the duties and responsibilities of being a Churchwarden and also the opportunities of the office.

The cost of the weekend is £110, and your parish should pay all or most of this as an indication of their willingness to resource you in the ministry they have elected you to.
