General Synod

General Synod is often described as the parliament of the Church of England.  It considers questions on a national scale, approving legislation that impacts on the whole Church.

General Synod is made up of around 460 members.  It is divided into three Houses: Bishops, Clergy and Laity.

The members of General Synod are primarily elected representatives drawn from across 44 dioceses that make up the Church of England.  All members serve for a period of five years; the last election was completed in 2010.
