Deanery Synod
Every Deanery is required to have a Synod. This is chaired by the Rural/Area Dean (except in the Channel Islands where the Deans of the Islands fulfill this function) and an elected Lay Chair.
In the Diocese of Winchester there has been a concerted move over recent years to give more responsibility to Deanery Synods. Two of the most significant functions that deaneries are now tasked with are developing and maintaining Deanery Pastoral & Mission Plans (for further information please see Diocesan Mission & Pastoral Committee) and agreeing the allocation of Parish Share (click here for further information on Parish Share).
Under the Synodical Government Measure 1969 deaneries also have the power to bring proposals and motions to Diocesan Synod for debate. Any deanery wishing to bring a motion to the Diocesan Synod should contact the Deputy Diocesan Secretary as soon as possible (01962 737307).
Deanery Synod members also act as the electorate for all elections to Diocesan Synod and General Synod.
